Hockey Stock: Buy Low Keepers

Trade deadlines in many leagues may have already come and gone but for fantasy hockey owners in keeper leagues there is little time to rest and looking ahead is always an important part of building a champion calibre team.

Here are a handful of players that keeper league fantasy hockey owners might consider acquiring at below-market value.

Trouble In the Desert

If the Phoenix Coyotes aren’t able to put bodies in the stands they are at the very least able to provide some fodder for NHL pundits and fans alike.  The situation that we are seeing in the desert is one that will set a new precedent for NHL teams in the future, because for those of you who don’t realize it there are about 6-8 other teams that may be in a similar predicament to the Desert Dogs very soon.  With the NHL acting as temporary owners of the Coyotes until a “suitable owner” is found, this season has proven to be an interesting case study.

Prospect Watch: Kevin Connauton

Kevin Connauton was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round, 83rd overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The offensive-minded defenseman was passed up by 29 other teams but is rounding out to being a shrewd selection for the Canucks scouting staff.  He has accumulated 65 points in only 64 games in his rookie season with the WHL's Vancouver Giants, a team with a strong history of developing young players despite the fact the franchise is only in it's 9th year of existence. Connauton is closing on the Giants points record for defenseman which is held by Brent Regner who totaled 67 points in 2008-09.

Is the Price Right?

In fantasy hockey there are many things that a fantasy owner fears.  We fear pulling the trigger on almost every trade, being faced with the reality of rebuilding our teams and most of all we fear a highly touted draft pick won’t work out.  As an owner and a critic I will say that it can be fun to watch someone pick a player on the suspicion he will be a fantasy stud just to see them hold onto said player for years and drop them.  In the case of Carey Price I have seen a great deal of movement in the past season or two with many owners giving up on the former can’t miss prospect for little to no return.  For those of you who have offloaded the young goaltender you should probably click to another informative School Your Pool article as you will adamantly disagree with the body of this piece.

Flames' Howse is Bruin

Flames' Howse is Bruin When the Calgary Flames drafted WHL'er Ryan Howse in the 3rd round (74th overall) they hoped the diminutive winger would prove to become a valuable prospect for the organization.  Well, Howse, 5-11, 195 lbs, has grown a few inches, added a few pounds, and continues to improve on what was a brea... Alexandre Giroux: NHL or AHL?

Alexandre Giroux: NHL or AHL?

Alexandre Giroux had a remarkable season with the Hershey Bears in 2008-09.  So remarkable in fact, that the 60 goal scorer broke two AHL records last year.  His 60 goals in the regular season and 15 in the playoffs gave him 75 goals overall, an AHL benchmark.  Along the way Giroux al...

Daily Fantasy Hockey Gold

Chalk one up for Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi, who stopped 28 of 30 shots in a 3-2 OT win over the Los Angeles Kings.  One game does not ensure anything for Niemi, except most likely the next start between the pipes.

Mikael Samuelsson scored another goal on Wednesday night as he has spent the last couple of games on the top line with Daniel and Henrik Sedin.  This probably isn't permanent as Alex Burrrows has been one of the most productive goal scorers in the NHL since January 1, 2009 but the Canucks will stick with Samuelsson with the twins as long as he stays hot.

Tyler Myers had a monster night for the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday as he picked up a goal and 3 assists.  Myers now has 9 goals and 36 points in 65 games with the Sabres and if he can finish strong should be one of the three finalists nominated for the Calder Trophy.  Myers is a stud who has 50-60 point potential.

Speaking of young Sabres players, prospect Tyler Ennis is having a fantastic rookie season with the AHL's Portland Pirates.  Ennis has 19 goals and 59 points in 61 games to lead all AHL rookies.  It will be interesting to see if he can make the next step to the NHL,
