In what was the biggest trade of the NHL's trade deadline day, the Edmonton Oilers shipped powerplay quarterback Lubomir Visnovsky to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Ryan Whitney.
This is another intriguing move for fantasy hockey owners, let's take a look at how it impacts your teams.
In Visnovsky, the Ducks acquire more offense for their backend. Visnovsky had a career season in 2005-06, scoring 67 points. He should play on the top PP unit in Anaheim alongside Scott Niedermayer. The move also gives the Ducks some insurance in case Niedermayer decides to retire this summer. Visnovsky is signed through the 2012-13 season. The Ducks powerplay should improve, and so should Visnovsky's numbers for the remainder of the year.
Ryan Whitney gets a new lease on life and he'll get it in Edmonton. Whitney should see time on the top PP unit alongside Tom Gilbert, but will battle Gilbert and Sheldon Souray once Souray returns from injury. It's important to note that Souray may miss the rest of the season with an infection in his surgically repaired hand.
Long term it is possible that the Oilers end up drafting stud defenseman Cam Fowler this summer. Fowler is a guy who many believe could step into the NHL immediately and has been compared by our OHL expert Brock Otten to Drew Doughty.
Fantasy owners in single year leagues should expect an increase in production from Visnovksy, and owners looking to replace a guy like Sheldon Souray might want to take a flyer on Whitney.
