The Boston Bruins have acquired defenseman Dennis Seidenberg and prospect Matt Bartowski from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz, and a 2nd round pick.
Seidenberg is a slight upgrade on Derek Morris, who was traded earlier in the day to the Phoenix Coyotes. Let's take a look at how this affects your fantasy hockey teams.
In Seidenberg, the Bruins get a defenseman who is capable of logging big minutes and playing on the powerplay. Of course, with Zdeno Chara and Dennis Wideman around it may come on the 2nd PP unit. Morris was getting 22 minutes of icetime with the Bruins, and Seidenberg was seeing nearly 23 minutes with the Panthers.
Seidenberg should continue to be a 30-35 point defenseman in Boston.
Weller and Bitz are role players who don't hold much fantasy value.
Bartowski is a project defenseman who plays physical and has a big shot from the point and could develop into a NHL dman but is still a few years away.
Perhaps the player that most benefits from this trade is Panthers defenseman Dmitri Kulikov. Kulikov will see more powerplay time and is definitely the powerplay quarterback of the future, and maybe present, in Florida. Kulikov should be looked at down the stretch in single year leagues and a definite own in keepers.
