Fantasy Hockey Gold - July 2, 2010

July 1 has come and gone and lots of players have new homes.  Be sure to read up on the fantasy implications of some of those moves here.

Two signings had me raise eyebrows on Thursday:  The Jokinen to Calgary signing was obviously one of them.  The other was the fact that Johan Hedberg got a no-trade clause in his deal with the Devils.  'Tis the season, I suppose.

Hamhuis to Vancouver had Canucks fans buzzing that the team would now be dealing Kevin Bieksa.  In fact, a speculative tweet by Columbus writer Aaron Portzline suggesting the Canucks might move Bieksa or Christian Ehrhoff had Canucks faithful in a frenzy for a few minutes.  Not so fast, says Mike Gillis, who suggests that Bieksa is still a member of the Canucks and could be valuable for the team.  With a number of RFA's still to sign I think the Canucks are going to be up against the cap and will be forced to make a move before the season starts and Bieksa is the most likely candidate.  Portzline later followed up with this blog post saying the Blue Jackets are targeting the Canucks for a defenseman and may be willing to part with Nikita Filatov.

Nice deal by Atlanta to acquire Andrew Ladd, who was a key 3rd-line checker for Chicago in the playoffs.  Equally impressive was the return the Hawks got for Ladd, a RFA who the team couldn't keep due to cap constraints.  Ivan Vishnevskiy is a pretty good offensive dman prospect.  You'll recall that Vishnevskiy went to Atlanta from Dallas in the trade for Kari Lehtonen

The Toronto Maple Leafs' Mike Van Ryn has decided to skip another season as he continues to rehab from knee surgery.

The Phoenix Coyotes have said that because of the Ray Whitney signing, they will be converting Wojtek Wolski to center.  Short term is won't affect fantasy hockey owners much, except that he would gain dual eligibility for a year.  But if Wolski plays the entire season at center and sticks there, his owners won't be happy to see him lose his LW eligibility.

Wasn't Vishnevsky (sp) acquired from New Jersey in the Kovalchuk trade?

No, maybe you're thinking of Johnny Oduya. Vishnevskiy came from Dallas.
