After compiling the latest school results, team academic consultants from around the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today released the names of the Scholastic Players of the Month for February.

Three QMJHL teams atop CHL BMO MasterCard Top 10 rankings

The Canadian Hockey League today announced its most recent BMO CHL MasterCard Top 10 rankings for the 2009-10 season.

The Saint John Sea Dogs remain in the #2 spot for a third consecutive week. Two other Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams managed to crack the upper echelon of the CHL: The Drummondville Voltigeurs and the Moncton Wildcats.

QMJHL Suspends four players

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc, today announced that three players have been suspended following incidents which occurred over the week-end.

Saint John Sea Dogs forward Mike Thomas has been suspended for a total of six games (an automatic one-game suspension plus five additional games) for an illegal hit which occurred during last Friday’s game versus the Moncton Wildcats.

Montreal Juniors defenseman David Stich has been suspended for a total of six games (an automatic one-game suspension plus five additional games) for a hit from behind which occurred during last Saturday’s game versus the Lewiston MAINEiacs.

Finally, Rimouski Océanic forward Félix Lefrançois has been suspended two games for kneeing an opponent during last Sunday’s game versus the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc, today announced that Quebec Remparts defenseman Mikael Tam has been suspended two games for a hit from behind. The incident occurred during last Friday’s game versus the Gatineau Olympiques.

The decisions were rendered after reviewing the videotapes of the incidents, gathering testimonies from the players and the organizations involved, reading the officials’ reports and consulting the independent committee in the matter of disciplinary sanctions.

The Disciplinary Prefect will not be available for further comment.

The QMJHL unveils medical committee

The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Gilles Courteau, today announced the creation of a medical committee which is comprised of five League employees:

- Natacha Llorens, the Education Advisor and Coordinator of the Players Help Program
- Dr. Sylvain Boutet, the President of the Doctors committee
- Philippe Fait, the Coordinator of the Athletic Therapists
- Pierre Leduc, the Director of Hockey Operations
- Marcel Patenaude, the Vice-President, Hockey

"We believe that it is of the utmost importance to remain proactive in regards to the health and safety of our players," commented the Commissioner. "The committee’s goal is to study and evaluate current practices and to find innovative solutions in order to better the environment for our players. Ultimately, the committee will enable us to consolidate our anti-doping policy, the players help program and other existing medical protocols."

Dr. Sylvain Boutet believes that the committee will have a positive impact on the safety and well-being of players.

"This committee will help establish stronger lines of communication between several of our services, which include therapists, doctors as well as teams and league personnel in order to improve our support systems."

QMJHL Hockey Vice-President Marcel Patenaude added: "This initiative will also enable us to make suggestions or recommendations as it relates to the equipment that is used by players and the rules that are in place to protect them."

Telus Players of the Week

Acadie-Bathurst Titan forward Jonathan Lessard and Moncton Wildcats goaltender Shane Owen today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week (March 1 to 7).

Lessard scored two goals and added three helpers in two Titan victories. Moreover, he posted an excellent +6 rating. The St-Eustache native had a career best five-point effort on Friday, helping Acadie-Bathurst defeat Halifax 8-1.

Shane Owen earns the defensive award after winning two games while posting a 1.44 goals-against-average and .941 save percentage. Owen also recorded a shutout by pushing away fourteen shots in a 2-0 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Centre 200 last Tuesday.
