QMJHL Division Changes & More

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has announced important changes to its divisions and to its playoffs format for the 2010-11 season following resolutions passed by the Board of Governors at the Semi-Annual Assembly of the Board of Governors and General Managers which was held at the Wyndham Hotel in Montreal.

Starting next season, the eighteen teams will be divided into three divisons: The TELUS West Division, the TELUS East Division and the Maritimes Division.

Hynes and Allen win TELUS Player of the Week Awards
Victoriaville Tigres forward Brandon Hynes and Drummondville Voltigeurs goaltender Jake Allen today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from February 8 to 14.

Hynes collected five goals and three assists while posting a +4 rating in three Tigres’ victories. Moreover, he registered a game-winner. The Norris Points (NL) native had a career-best five-point outing on Wednesday in a 13-3 rout of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Hynes has been red-hot since the beginning of February, recording thirteen points in only five games.

As for Allen, he helped the Voltigeurs register three wins with stellar performances in all three contests, closing out the week with a 1.30 goals-against-average and .951 save percentage. Allen played his best game on Saturday, pushing away 28 of 30 shots in the first three periods and in overtime as well as stopping all five skaters in the shootout to secure a 3-2 win over the Huskies. He was named the game’s first star.

Marcel-Robert Trophy candidates revealed
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the eighteen candidates for the Marcel-Robert Trophy, which will be awarded to the Scholastic Player of the Year at the Golden Puck Awards Gala on Wednesday, March 31.

Each team’s candidate will receive a $400 bursary. The five finalists, who are expected to be announced in the next few days, will earn an additional $400.

Finally, the award-winner will receive the Marcel-Robert Trophy as well as a $500 grant.

QMJHL unveils Scholastic Players of the Month

After compiling the latest school results, team academic consultants from around the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today released the names of the Scholastic Players of the Month for January.

This initiative’s goal, which was developed by the QMJHL and its member clubs, is to recognize student athletes’ performances both on the ice and in the classroom.

Sea Dogs remain top dogs of CHL BMO MasterCard Top 10 rankings
The Canadian Hockey League today announced its most recent BMO CHL MasterCard Top 10 rankings for the 2009-10 season.

The Saint John Sea Dogs are once again ranked #1. Two other Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams managed to crack the upper echelon of the CHL: The Moncton Wildcats and the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

Daily Fantasy Hockey Gold

The Dallas Stars have gotten into the giving mood and extended a training camp invite to former 50-goal scorer Jonathan Cheechoo.  Fantasy owners shouldn't get excited.  I wonder if there are some sort of tax write-offs for the Stars, because you can put it in the bank:  Cheechoo's days as a fantasy contributor are finished.

SYP's Shawn Reznik just completed an interview with Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Nikita Filatov, which will be up sometime in the next 24 hours. 

Word out of Florida is that Panthers draft pick Erik Gudbranson has a very good shot at making the club this year.  The 18-year old was the first defenseman selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (3rd overall) and projects as an imposing physical force defensively with
